It's the winter solstice

Yes, we do have seasons in southern California. You just have to be a bit more aware when the changing of the seasons is masked by unseasonably balmy summertime temperatures such as those we've experienced this week. We do our best with what we have so I guess that's why we string holiday lights on the jacaranda and ficus trees lining the streets of Santa Monica.

The shortest day of the year seems to evoke some kind of archaic sense of connection with nature that I can't quite explain logically. All I know is that I like to celebrate by going out on a hike out in the local mountains on winter solstice.

That is what we'll be up to today.
