Spring Equinox

To know that there are seasons in LA requires a bit more awareness for us urban dwellers but I did notice our fuchsias have been leafing out wildly. Yesterday I caught a brief glimpse of both the white and blue flowered ceanothus in full array in the local Santa Monica Mountains. Spring is officially here when the blue ceanothus blooms according to my book.

Burn areas ironically are the most joyful places in springtime. I've run into botanists from all over southern Cal looking for exotic Mariposa lily species that usually pop up only after a big burn.

Needless to say, I have plans to run around with my biologist momfriend next weekend in search of the rare and the unusual.
